Facial Recognition FAQ

What is facial recognition used for?
Facial recognition technology is used in Ento’s Time Clock module to allow staff to clock in and out of shifts. Facial recognition makes it easy for managers to accurately verify that the right staff member has clocked in or out.

What devices support facial recognition?
Facial Recognition within the Time Clock module is supported on laptops, tablets (both Android and iOS) and desktops with webcams. It is not supported on smartphones. We recommend establishing a permanent base for Time Clock on a tablet or computer in a well-lit area that is at a level where staff of various heights will be seen.

How accurate is facial recognition in Ento?
Ento’s facial recognition is up to 99% accurate, but accuracy depends on the quality of the image taken. A series of images are required to train the engine for each individual user, and a variety of different angles help us to reach higher image recognition accuracy. This accuracy is also impacted by lighting – a poorly lit image may fail to be recognised. Recognition is generally achieved in 2-3 clear images taken in the same location. If the camera location varies, we recommend up to 10 images to achieve highest accuracy.

Will I be recognised with glasses / a beard / a new haircut?
Yes – the facial recognition engine uses the various angles and points of your face to verify your identity and after it has been trained to recognise you, it will be able to identify you with a variety of different looks!

Who has access to this data?
All managers who have access to approving timesheets have access to photographs taken in the Time Clock interface. These images are used to ‘train’ the facial recognition engine to a particular staff member’s face and are available to be reviewed by managers to ensure that the correct staff member is clocking in and out of a shift.

Is my face data secure?
Once an image is taken with Time Clock the file is converted to a text-based format, encrypted and sent to our partner SkyBiometry via a secure API for processing. SkyBiometry does not store any identifiable information about any Ento users, instead using an anonymous identifier that has no connection to any Ento data. This means that in the case of a breach at SkyBiometry, the data cannot be used to reverse engineer an individual’s identity. Images of staff members who have been deleted from Ento are also removed and untrained by SkyBiometry.

Can my face data be deleted?
The original image is stored in Ento’s database and is accessible via the Manager area on individual timesheets. If a client wishes, they can request for this data to be deleted. For more information on this, please contact our Support team.

Where is my data stored?
Ento runs on Amazon’s AWS platform hosted in at least two locations in the Sydney region (for Australian clients). Ento takes the security of our customer’s data very seriously, performing quarterly penetration testing by a third party. For detailed security and privacy information, please see Ento’s Technical and Security FAQs and Privacy Policy.
Our facial recognition partner SkyBiometry stores all data in Europe, the USA and Canada in accordance with the requirements of General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of 27 April 2016, “GDPR”). For further details, please see SkyBiometry’s Privacy Policy
